INFLUENCING CHANGE
The School Waste Diversion Initiative
This initiative will provide schools with waste receptacles on site to divert non-biodegradable waste(i.e., recyclables, compostables) from local landfills. Schools will receive financial and resource incentives for achieving the largest amount of recycled tonnage which will be calculated throughout the course of the year.
The Clean Atlanta Green Day
Tied to national Earth Day(April 22nd), this initiative will unify businesses, schools, nonprofits, and government officials in cleaning up the City of Atlanta through a massive recycling effort and targeted greening projects.
The GreenHouse Community Gardens Program
This initiatve includes the adoption of several parcels of land around the City of Atlanta to develop organic community vegetable gardens. Gardens will be managed by local school Garden Clubs and community volunteers. Produce grown in GreenHouse Community Gardens will be sold to raise funds for ongoing green living programs or will be donated to surrounding community service organizations that provide food to those in need.
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
Green Collar Career Development and Training Program
This program will train students to find and succeed in jobs that impact sustainability of natural resources and our environment. Similar to the format of the Atlanta Green Job Corps model, this program will be in collaboration with other green-focused businesses, nonprofits and individuals. Students will have a chance to meet, be mentored by and have hands-on training with key business professionals already working in careers and businesses focused on sustainability.
Green Career College Scholarship Program
This program will provide college scholarships to high school seniors, based on academic performance, who have been accepted into a university-level program with an environmental science concentration.
Green Summer Scholarship Program
This program will provide scholarships to students in grades K-8 with a financial need who are interested in attending summer programs focused on green education.
